The only possible way to put a stop to the ever-increasing population of stray dogs and cats is by sterilizing them so that they will not produce more offspring. Furthermore, male dogs can start procreating as early as 6 months and can sire unlimited litters. Only 20 percent of puppies in India make it to their first birthday. Spay and neutering street dogs is the most humane way to stabilize stray animal populations.

Neutering brings down general aggression. Also, once the males are neutered, they have no urge to wander far, and they “settle down” at a place and treat it as “home”. As a result, they prevent new dogs from entering.

Impact- Sterilisation programmes are an effective tool for controlling street dog populations. High densities of free roaming or street dogs increases the risk of human dog bites, zoonotic disease transmission, and poorer animal welfare .
